At present, around 95% of organic production is based on crop varieties that were bred for the conventional high-input sector, lacking important traits required under organic and low-input production conditions. Populations with a high level of genetic diversity are promising for OA (organic agriculture) conditions due to their adaptation, resilience and performance stability in different environments. Organic farming will benefit from cultivars (populations, varieties) that can cope with multiple stresses such as weeds, diseases, pests, climate change and low nitrogen input from manure. In the COBRA project (Coordinating Organic Plant Breeding Activities for diversity), plant genetic diversity and its potential have been investigated from both an... |

With the aim to improve the mass rearing feasibility of tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), design of experimental methodology using Taguchi orthogonal array was applied. To do so, the effect of 16 ingredients of an artificial diet including bean, wheat germ powder, Nipagin, ascorbic acid, formaldehyde, oil, agar, distilled water, ascorbate, yeast, chloramphenicol, benomyl, penicillin, temperature, humidity, and container size on some biological characteristics of H. armigera was evaluated. The selected 16 factors were considered at two levels (32 experiments) in the experimental design. Among the selected factors, penicillin, container size, formaldehyde, chloramphenicol, wheat germ powder, and agar showed significant... |

In Central Europe low temperature is limiting soybean growth and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). The BNF efficiency was shown to increase with bradyrhizobia strains selected for their cold tolerance. Significant bradyrhizobia x soybean variety interactions were reported. Co-inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) may promote bradyrhizobia and improve plant phosphorus uptake. The aim of this study is to identify (i) bradyrhizobia showing improved nodulation under cool conditions, (ii) bradyrhizobia x soybean variety and (iii) bradyrhizobia x AMF interactions. In 2011 twelve bradyrhizobia inoculants were tested with three soybean (Glycine max [L.]) varieties under three temperature regimes (14/10°C, 16/12°C, 22/20 °C) in a pot trial. In 2012... |
